His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 4 Recap
In the previous episode of HBO’s His Dark Materials, Lyra left with the Gyptians has they headed to the North. In His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 4, Lyra and the Gyptians arrived in Trollesund and met with the Witch Consul, and Lee Scoresby searched for an armored bear, Iorick Byrnison.
The Witch Consul
Farder Coram wished to see the Witch Consul, Dr. Martin Lanselius. His former love, Serafina Pekkala, was a witch, queen of the Lake Enara clan, and Farder Coram wished to involve her. Lanselius knew about Lyra’s alethiometer and asked to see it. Lyra told him that she could interpret the compass without the books to translate. He challenged her in finding the cloud-pine sprigs that belonged to Serafina. Lyra correctly determined the right bottle, and Lanselius gave her some to summon Serafina when she desperately needed her. After Lyra wondered what they weren’t asking, Lanselius told them they should hire Iorick Byrnison, an armored bear, or panserbjorn, in town. Later, Farder Coram worried about the greedy look Lanselius had when he watched Lyra with the alethiometer.
Kaisa, Serafina’s daemon, visted Farder Coram and John Faa. Farder Coram had heard that witches’ daemons could separate from them. Kaisa asked on behalf of Serafina if they wished to make war. They were ready if it came down to it. He also advised that some of the witches interested in Dust were working with the Oblation Board at the Station, known as Bolvangar. Serafina agreed to support them.
Lee Scoresby and Iorick Byrnison
Lee Scoresby, an aeronaut, arrived in Trollesund to find Iorick Byrnison, whom he owed a debt. Lyra found Iorick and later met Lee. Lee learned that the Magisterium was punishing Iorick for getting drunk and tearing up the town. They took his armor and hid it. Lee claimed that it was he who owned Iorick’s armor, but the Magisterium was controlling the Sysselman.
Lyra offered to hire Lee and Iorick on behalf of John Faa, who had told her that he didn’t want the armored bear. She used the alethiometer to find Iorick’s armor. Iorick tore through town and got his armor back. Lyra stopped him from killing the Sysselman and brought Iorick and Lee with her to the Gyptians. They headed for inland for the Station.
Deals and Blackmail
Marisa Coulter arrived at the Magisterium. Father McPhail was angry about how she dealt with the Master and Jordan College. Mrs. Coulter told Cardinal Sturrock that she had Lord Asriel. In exchange for giving him to them, she would be allowed to continue her work on the Oblation Board and could ask Fra Pavel a question for his alethiometer. She went to Iofur Raknison, who had captured Asriel and was keeping him prisoner. Marisa had helped Iofur take the throne from Iorick, who was in exile.
Borreal went to Fra Pavel. He threatened him with exposing his dark secrets. He initially wanted to know what Marisa had asked. His question to Fra Pavel became how he could find what Grumman discovered.
