When it came to deciding who had to be given Captain America’s shield moving forward in the MCU, Markus and McFeely felt there were more interesting stories in Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson (aka Falcon).

“The figure of Captain America has always been an aspirational thing about the true promise of what the idea of America could be,” Markus told us. “He doesn’t work for the government, he’s an idea, and I think Sam embodies that much more than Bucky. The figure of Captain America has always been an aspirational thing about the true promise of what the idea of America could be. He doesn’t work for the government. He’s an idea. I think Sam embodies that much more than Bucky.”

“I think there’s just more interesting stories with Sam going forward, if I’m just being mercenary about storytelling,” said McFeely. “I don’t know what they’re going to do with Buck and the Winter Soldier, but I’d like to see the Sam story. Undoubtedly, there’s a story if Bucky were to put the shield on, but you can already predict that, right? Like, some people are not going to be happy about that because of crimes in his past. We talked to Malcolm Spellman. Derek Kolstad I think got brought on later to the show, so Malcom’s the creator. We talked to him a little bit, but he’s been pretty cagey. So I don’t know actually everything he has in mind. I know they’re about to start shooting. So I guess I’m just passing the buck on that. I’m eager to see it.”

When it came down to the final moment between Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes (aka the Winter Soldier), Markus and McFeely wanted to ensure that fans felt the solidarity between the two men and their realization they’ve finally come to a peaceful state in their lives.

“Hopefully that resonates and registers that they share this long look and they have had a conversation, and have shared this long history, I think they’re going to radically change,” McFeely said.

“I love the idea that Cap has spent three movies saving Bucky in one way or another and getting him back to a place where he is a solid and stable human being,” Markus said. “And now it’s Cap’s turn, that Buck can help in his own way get Steve what he was unable to have.”

John Wick creator Derek Kolstad joined the writing/creative team of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, though details are still under wraps, it seems likely to follow up on Falcon’s new status quo after Avengers: Endgame.

Anthony Mackie (Point Blank) and Sebastian Stan (I, Tonya) will be reprising their roles as Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. Joining them are MCU veterans Daniel Brujl and Emily VanCamp, who are set to return as Helmut Zemo and Sharon Carter, respectively. Neither character has appeared onscreen since 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.

During the Marvel Studios panel at D23 Expo 2019, it was revealed that Wyatt Russell (Lodge 49, Black Mirror) has joined the series for the role of Marvel Comics character U.S. Agent.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier may only run for six episodes, but it will connect with the larger MCU.

Disney+ will launch on November 12. A monthly subscription will cost $6.99 a month, with an annual subscription set at $69.99. When Disney+ launches, 7,500 episodes, 25 original series, 400 library movie titles, and 100 recent theatrical film releases will be available. The service will be ad-free, supported solely by subscription fees, and will be available on gaming consoles, smart TV’s, and connected streaming devices.
