Blumhouse's Black Christmas Remake Earns PG-13 Rating

Blumhouse’s Black Christmas remake earns PG-13 rating

The cult slasher classic Black Christmas is returning to theaters in the form of another remake from hit small budget production company Blumhouse, but unlike the previous 2006 update and the 1974 original, it’s earned a tame PG-13 rating from the MPAA. (Via Bloody Disgusting)

The official rating from the MPAA reads as follows:

Violence, terror, thematic content involving sexual assault, language, sexual material and drinking.

Though it may come as a surprise to some that the third attempt at the slasher would aim for a lower rating, given Blumhouse’s history, it fits right in with the rest of its library, filled with PG-13 horror fare including the Insidious and Happy Death Day franchises. Though some R-rated projects have spawned from the studio, including Get Out and The Purge franchise, they were considered lower risks to warrant a greater reward should the film explode at the box office, versus a project that previously underwhelmed at the box office.

Hawthorne College is quieting down for the holidays. One by one, sorority girls on campus are being killed by an unknown stalker. But the killer is about to discover that this generation’s young women aren’t willing to become hapless victims as they mount a fight to the finish.

From director Sophia Takal (Always Shine) from the script she wrote with April Wolfe (Widower), comes a bold new take on the 1974 horror classic starring Imogen Poots (Green RoomThe Art of Defense), Aleyse Shannon (Charmed), Brittany O’Grady (Star), Lily Donoghue (The GoldbergsJane the Virgin), Caleb Eberhardt (Broadway’s Choir Boy), and Cary Elwes.

Black Christmas is produced by Jason Blum (HalloweenSplit) for his Blumhouse Productions, by Ben Cosgrove (The Good German, Rumor Has It) and by Adam Hendricks (CamBloodlineLucky) for Divide/Conquer. Hendricks’ partners in Divide/Conquer, Greg Gilreath (CamBloodline) and Zac Locke (Adopt-A-HighwayBloodline), will executive produce.

Black Christmas will be released on Friday, December 13. Buy the original film here.
