October Horror Movie Recommendations: The Cabin in the Woods

Every day for the month of October, Coming Soon is making a new horror movie recommendation for those eager to find a new frightening flick for Halloween. From the creepy goodness of a classy ghost story to a blood-spattered gorefest and everything in between, we’ll have something for every taste of horror. And today’s pick is…

The Cabin in the Woods

What’s The Cabin in the Woods about: Five friends (Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams) venture to a remote cabin in the woods for some R&R and inadvertently unlock a mysterious evil tied to a local legend. Pretty generic stuff, right? Wrong. I will say little more, suffice to say the crazy tricks Drew Goodard and Joss Whedon manage to conjure in this wildly thrilling and deeply under-appreciated horror film will knock your friggin’ socks off.

Why The Cabin in the Woods rules: I don’t want to reveal too much for those who have yet to see the film, because, really, it’s the clever twists and turns that propel The Cabin in the Woods to such high esteem — at least in my eyes. Oh sure, an argument could be made that Goddard’s film is a little too clever for its own good and amounts to little more than a wry commentary on the horror genre in general. But it’s just so damned entertaining that I don’t really care. And neither will you!

How scary is The Cabin in the Woods: More fun than scary, but still scary, if that makes any sense. The film is scary, even as it leans on a number of horror tropes fans of the genre will appreciate; but for that reason, it’s not quite scary because you know what to expect. But that’s sort of the point. In much the same way Wes Craven’s Scream offered a unique meta-commentary on slasher films whilst simultaneously delivering a fairly generic (albeit entertaining) slasher film, The Cabin in the Woods dissects the horror genre whilst also offering viewers a fairly standard horror film. And until the big twist, you’d be forgiven for believing the whole exercise was a lazy cash grab… But then mermen happen and the fun (and gore) really begins.

Be on the lookout for: Mermen. Not saying any more.

Where to watch Cabin in the Woods: The movie is available to rent for $1.99 at Amazon Prime Video. You can pick up your Blu-ray copy by clicking here.
