October Horror Movie Recommendation: It Follows

Every day for the month of October, Coming Soon is making a new horror movie recommendation for those eager to find a new frightening flick for Halloween. From the creepy goodness of a classy ghost story to a blood-spattered gorefest and everything in between, we’ll have something for every taste of horror. And today’s pick is…

It Follows

What’s It Follows about: After a traumatizing post-sexual encounter, Jay (Maika Monroe) is pursued by a slow-paced supernatural entity that never runs yet never stops until its victim is dead. Jay and her friends discover that the unrelenting nightmare is passed from person to person through sex, essentially a paranormal and predatory STD. Left without the comfort of knowing what the enemy looks like as it is capable of appearing like any ordinary person, Jay and her pals desperately search for a way to put an end to the curse before more bodies drop. The movie was written and directed by David Robert Mitchell (Under the Silver Lake).

Why It Follows rules: It Follows introduced horror fans to indie star Maika Monroe, who nails Jay’s fear and desperation as the only one among her friends who can actually see the entity. A particularly great sequence takes place on the beach when the thing attacks, leaving the audience guessing up to the last second whether or not the girl walking behind Jay is her friend or the monster. Besides its intense horror vibe, It Follows is also a showcasing of deeply bonded friendships and the type of loyal buddies we all wish we had willing to go to the extreme for us.

How scary is It Follows: It Follows is a unique and original psychological horror film that plays on our anxieties, relying less on jump-scares and more the inevitable dread that the nightmare is seemingly impossible to stop and keeps coming no matter how far you run. The entity’s ability to look like anyone drives the paranoia through the roof at every random person walking the streets — or even in your own home — that could potentially be it coming to kill you. The indie, which was a smash hit at the box office, will stick with you long after the credits roll, especially thanks to its debatable ending.

Be on the lookout for: The lead character, Jay, is a tribute to Halloween scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis. Jay even has a sister named Kelly in the film, which is likely a nod to Curtis’ sister Kelly. Additionally, the girl that appears in the opening scene of It Follows is named Annie. In Halloween, one of Laurie’s friends shares the same name.

Where to watch It Follows: The film is available to rent for $3.99 on Amazon Prime Video. Pick up your own copy of the Blu-ray by clicking here.
