Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece takes players back to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece

Fans of Egyptian history were in for a treat when Ubisoft implemented the Discovery Tour in Assassin’s Creed Origins. But what about a Discovery Tour for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which was released last year in October? The wait will soon be over when Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece releases this month. We had the chance to check out the new mode, and it’s a nice change of pace from the chaotic world of Ancient Greece.

Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece allows players to roam the ancient world of Greece without worry from enemies. You can play as Alexios, Kassandra, or Layla, but if you’re tired of playing the heroes from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you can also unlock and play as other supporting characters or enemies. (That’s 35 characters to choose from.) With 30 Guided Tours, there are over 7 hours of content, and you can learn from a wide range of topics including the Battle of Thermopylae with King Leonidas as your guide, Battle of Marathon, Olympic Games, Theater, Music and many more.

There are different ways to begin a tour. You can travel by foot or horse to search for them in the game world. With horses, you can unlock and choose between 15 different mounts. To make things even easier, you can fast travel, and you can travel directly to the tour via the map by clicking on the respective tour icon. One of the quickest methods to start a tour is to head to the options menu and browse the Tours menu, and they are divided into 5 categories. You can also go by timeline under the Timeline menu.

There are five tour guides, and they include historical and fictional characters like Aspasia, Leonidas, Herodotos, Markos, and Barnabas. Since we’re fans of the 300 Spartans, the Battle of Thermopylai was one of the first tours we checked out. Upon arriving in the region of Malis, we met up with Leonidas, and he started the tour and gave us instructions. You will be following a golden path that will lead you from one location to the next.

Each location activates a cinematic cutscene with narration about that particular location, topic or event. As we walked along the path of Thermopylai, we got a sense of how the Spartans used the Hot Gates to funnel the Persians, allowing them to deliver some devastating blows. The battle was ultimately a failure, but it showed the bravery of the Spartans and gave Greeks the courage to rally and fight back. Once we finished the tour, we had the option of taking a quiz from Leonidas. It’s an added incentive to pay attention to what you’re watching. And of course, if you give the wrong answer, the tour guide will have something to say about that.

Aside from the tours, there are other activities including Discovery Sites and Behind the Scenes info. Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece has 228 Discovery Sites, and you’ll need to venture off the golden path to find them or use your eagle. As for each golden path location, you can access Behind the Scenes info to learn more about a particular subject within the golden path. This is pretty cool for those who want to see real photographs of statues, buildings and artifacts.

With the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey engine, Ubisoft is able to make history fun as you get to explore the world either in third person or first person. With hours of content, Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece will definitely help you brush up on your Ancient Greece knowledge.

Score: 4/5 Atoms

Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC as a standalone and as a free update in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on September 10, 2019. Google Stadia will be getting it in November 2019.

A PC copy was provided by Ubisoft for review purposes.
