The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that the series adaptation of the comic book El Gato Negro has been picked up by Apple TV+. Diego Boneta (Terminator: Dark Fate) is still attached to star in and executive produce the project with Robert Rodriguez (Alita: Battle Angel) now signing on to direct and executive produce.

Based on the Azteca Productions character of the same name created by Richard Dominguez, the story is an intergenerational tale of two crime-fighters in South Texas, one of whom is a young man that  takes up the titular mantle of the fabled local hero after the death of his best friend, while the other is his grandfather who used his talents as a luchadore to fight crime decades prior.

The project first began development in February when Boneta first teamed with MGM Television to develop the adaptation to star and executive produce through his production company Three Amigos, but after not finding anyone that could properly script the project, the adaptation began to stall until summer at San Diego Comic-Con when Boneta heard a pitch from Supergirl scribe Eric Carrasco and the project gained new traction.

The series will mark the latest collaboration between Rodriguez and MGM Television, with the two previously partnering on Lucha Underground for the director’s cabler El Rey Network, as well as his first full foray back into television since El Rey’s adaptation of his 1996 hit From Dusk Till Dawn, for which he acted as showrunner and the occasional writer/director.

Boneta, who is best known for his roles in the 2012 film adaptation of the musical Rock of Ages and the first season of Fox’s Scream Queens, will next be seen in the sixth installment of the long-running sci-fi action franchise, Terminator: Dark Fate, which is set to hit theaters on November 1.
