Good Boys Opens to #1 Spot with Biggest Original Comedy Opening of 2019

Universal Pictures’ Good Boys opened in first place with an estimated $21 million haul and exceeding studio expectations. Good Boys had the biggest opening for an original comedy this year, is the first R-rated comedy to open at #1 since The Boss in April 2016, and joins Universal’s Us as the only original movies to open #1 domestically all year. The film also propelled Universal across the $1 billion mark domestically, making them the only studio besides Disney to accomplish this in 2019. Directed by Gene Stupnitsky, Good Boys stars  Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams and Brady Noon

Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw slipped into the #2 spot with $14.14 million and a domestic total of $133.7 million. Internationally the film brought in $45.7 million, giving it an international total of $303.3 million and a global total of $437 million. Worldwide the film is now the fifth highest grossing entry in the series, but remains well behind the others with the #4 film in the series, Fast Five, sitting at $626.1 million worldwide in 2011.

Walt Disney Pictures’ The Lion King held onto the #3 spot at the domestic box office with another $11.9 million for a US total of $496 million. Internationally the film brought in $33.8 million for an international total of $939.1 million. Worldwide the film has now brought in $1.435 million, making it the #9 highest grossing movie of all time after passing Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Sony’s The Angry Birds Movie 2 opened in fourth place, bringing in $10.5 million, a huge drop off from the first film which opened with $38 million in 2016. The first Angry Birds brought in $352.3 million worldwide throughout its theatrical run, something the sequel will need a lot of help matching.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark from Lionsgate, CBS Films, and eOne fell -51.9% from second to fifth place but still bringing in $10 million and giving it a US total of $40 million. Produced on a reported budget of $25 million, the adaptation is on its way to becoming a modest summer hit, even surpassing the likes of Child’s Play, Crawl, and Happy Death Day 2U. It’s unclear how well the film will do overseas however, as the property very seldom crossed over into other countries from America.

Elsewhere at the box office:

This weekend marks only the third time this year that the #1 and #2 films came from the same studios (April 19 – 21 had Warner Bros with Shazam and La Llorona; April 26 – 28 had Disney with Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel).

47 Meters Down: Uncaged opened in sixth place with $9 million, down from the first film in 2017 which opened to $11.2 million.

Warner Bros. Blinded By the Light opened in ninth place with $4.45 million

Richard Linklater’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette opened in eleventh place with $3.455 million.

This weekend also marks the lowest total gross weekend of the summer.
