D23 Expo: Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt set sail in Jungle Cruise footage

If D23 Expo is any sign of the fun we’re going to have in Jungle Cruise when we’re in for an incredibly fun time. During their D23 Studio panel, Dwayne Johnson arrived into a panel in a classic version of the Jungle Cruise boat. Always the showman, Johnson used his charisma and bravado to get everyone hyped about the footage everyone was about to watch.

The footage began with Johnson’s character, Frank, playing a cinematic version of the Jungle Cruise skipper–complete with the “other side of water” joke that you always hear when you ride the Jungle Cruise. Unfortunately, the con is not providing him with a lot of money. If he doesn’t come up with enough money in time, his whole company will close. Enter Emily Blunt. She has a lot of money that will save him but he worries about the destination. Now they’ll go on an adventure that’ll see them going up against ancient tribal natives and creatures. It’s a big and fun trailer that seems to be centered on Dwayne Johnson. Not to mention, you weirdly see Dwayne Johnson’s name big and Emily Blunt’s name small.

So it turns out it wasn’t just a coincidence. Emily Blunt comes out in a classic 50s vehicle. Blunt asks Johnson if he’s the one who cut that trailer. Instead, she wants to show the crowd the TRUE trailer for the Jungle Cruise.

The footage begins in London where Emily Blunt is sneaking around inside a building looking for something. Once she grabs the map, the men inside the room try to chase after her. She runs away, jumps out of a window, and lands on top of a double-decker bus. We now see Dwayne Johnson, with his big bald head cut off from the frame, walking around in his office. In comes Emily Blunt and we see their first interaction from her side this time. Also, we see a lot of the action against the ancient enemies centered more on Emily Blunt. Not to mention, we see Dwayne Johnson’s name smaller and Emily Blunt’s name even bigger on screen.

Turns out that neither trailers are the official trailers. All kidding aside, Johnson says that he made Jungle Cruise because of Indiana Jones, Romancing the Stone, and The Maltese Falcon. He also recognizes the responsibility of doing a film based on the beloved ride. After all, that was the very first ride inside the Disneyland park when it opened in 1955. “This is Walt’s baby,” says Johnson.

Jungle Cruise hits theaters on July 2020.
