SDCC 2019: IT: Chapter Two brings Pennywise’s terrorizing antics to ScareDiego

For the third year in a row, New Line Cinema is bringing scares to San Diego with their annual Comic-Con event, ScareDiego. In its inaugural year, New Line brought IT: Chapter One and in its third year, it’s bringing IT once again to ScareDiego with IT: Chapter Two. Host Conan O’Brien was joined by director Andy Muschietti, James McAvoy (Bill), Jessica Chastain (Beverly), Bill Hader (Ritchie), Isaiah Mustafa (Mike), Jay Ryan (Ben), James Ransone (Eddie), and Andy Bean (Stanley).

The brand new trailer for IT: Chapter Two premiered to the crowd which featured a lot of mayhem and a lot of tense moments between Pennywise and the Losers Club. Right from the get-go, you can see how close the adult actors look to their kid counterparts. But this cast wasn’t all automatic hires. “Half of the cast was pre-thought and the other half went through auditions,” he said.

Of course, Jessica Chastain is one of those pre-thought actors in Muschietti’s mind. The actress worked with Muschietti on his first film, Mama. So the relationship is already there, and so is Chastain’s confidence in him. She was so confident in him that she even made the suggestion to go big. A “Carrie on steroids,” she said.

Thus, in the middle of winter, the crew dumped 4,500 gallons of ice-cold fake blood on her. Unfortunately for her, there was no way to heat up the fake blood. Since the blood was made with a bit of sugar, so if the sugar gets hot then it becomes putrid. “It begins to smell like puke essentially,” McAvoy said.

Chastain wasn’t the only cast member going through some tough times on the IT: Chapter Two set. James McAvoy sustained an injury to both his quads. As a result of the injury, he got tendonitis in his knees. Yet Isaiah Mustafa put in the preparation for this. Before any chase, Mustafa would stretch. Yes, that’s all you need to do to prevent an injury. Who knew?!

The Gang Reunites

The clip takes a look at the Losers Club reunion at the Jade of the Orient restaurant. It’s a compelling scene where everyone reunites with their defenses sky high. But once they begin to drink and reminisce, their defenses begin to crumble.

But this is the perfect opportunity to strike for Pennywise. They realize that they’ve repressed all memories of Pennywise once they left Derry. Now that they remember, they feel the fear come over them again.

Seeing everyone interact with each other, you feel the same chemistry that you did with the original kid cast. Surprisingly, the cast was able to interact with Bill Skarsgard offscreen this time around. Yet the actor was still able to scare the cast on and offscreen. But Skarsgard’s on and off switch made a huge impression on Bill Hader. “It was one of the best acting experiences ever,” he said.

Funhouse from Hell

In this clip, we see Bill Denbrough running through a hall of mirrors trying to save a kid. Of course, Pennywise is involved. The scene is both visually stunning with its use of colors and tense because of its setting.

Yet this tense scene wasn’t originally a part of the script. James McAvoy told Andy Muschietti that Bill’s survivor’s guilt is the main source of conflict for him. To solve that, Muschietti expanded the funhouse scene and made it more complex.

There is a lot of preparation that went into this scene. First, they had to map the maze. Next, they had to map where the cameras would be. Finally, they had to set up the lights in the right way so the camera’s reflection wouldn’t be seen.

The Gang Visits the Evil House

In a dark night, Bill and the rest of the Losers Club go to the evil house to finish off Pennywise once and for all. Unfortunately for them, the house is now ready for them. They split the team and Bill, Ritchie, and Eddie is stuck inside the kitchen. The fridge shakes and rumble and something evil come out of it. “You gotta be f*cking kidding me,” Ritchie said.

For fans of John Carpenter’s The Thing, that line might sound awfully familiar. That’s because that was done on purpose. Both Hader and Muschietti are fans of The Thing. So they made the decision to do that line and that line made the final cut. In addition, the fridge scene was one of the scenes that were a total surprise for the cast. Directors like Muschietti, love to surprise their cast to get the most natural reactions of them. This is one of those moments.

You can watcb these moments and the more when IT: Chapter Two hits theaters on September 6th.
