Since its premiere in 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has aired 246 episodes over 12 seasons and spawned two separate movies with a third one due to release next year. There’s no denying that SpongeBob has gained millions of fans of all ages over the years, and one fan has taken a big step to show his appreciation to the beloved cartoon. That fan is NBA champion and current team member of the Brooklyn Nets, Kyrie Irving. In collaboration with SpongeBob SquarePants, Kyrie Irving brings a special 5-shoe collection that will include three of the Nike Kyrie 5’s and two of the Nike Kyrie Low 2. Each pair will pay homage to one of the cartoons most iconic characters.
Of course, the titular character SpongeBob will be represented on the Kyrie 5 with a yellow colorway that is accented in white, red, and gum accents, with a squiggly Nike swoosh that represents SpongeBobs comedic and irregular ways. His partner in crime and best friend Patrick Starr will also be represented on the Kyrie 5 silhouette that will be donned in a Pink colorway that is complemented with a neon green sole. SpongeBob’s nemesis/co-worker/sometimes-friend Squidward will complete the Kyrie 5 silhouettes. He will bring on an aqua blue-green colorway with purple and brown accents. All three shoes will have the Nickelodeon logo stamped on the lace-sheath.
On the Nike Kyrie Low 2’s we’ll see a white, brown, and gray colorway that will symbolize Sandy Cheeks and her astronaut suit. While the other will represent SpongeBobs favorite boss and owner of the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krusty Krab. The shoe will come in a Red colorway, with an all-blue sole, with touches of green and yellow to finish off the design.
This isn’t the first time that Kyrie Irving came in with a fun and bold collaboration. Last year he teamed up with General Mills to bring a collection of cereal-themed Nike Kyrie 4 shoes. Both collaborations are a recognition and admiration of the things the basketball superstar grew up with. The Kyrie Irving and SpongeBob collaboration are slated to hit stores this August.
