BBC’s Expectation developing a new TV remake of Anna Karenina
According to Deadline, BBC Studios’ Expectation is in the process of developing a brand new TV adaptation of acclaimed Russian author Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel Anna Karenina. The TV remake will be penned by The Girl writer Gwyneth Hughes.
Anna Karenina is a tragic romance novel which was published in 1878. It follows the story of many major characters that is led by Princess Anna Karenina, who has entered into a scandalous affair with Cavalry officer Vronsky. The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.

The latest adaptation of the novel was the 2012 film remake which was directed by Joe Wright from a script written by Tom Stoppard. The Anna Karenina movie was consists of a star-studded cast comprised of Oscar nominees Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice) and Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley) along with Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals), Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Matthew Macfadyen, Domhnall Gleeson (About Time), Ruth Wilson (His Dark Materials), and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl).
Hughes is recently adapted William Makepeace Thackeray’s Vanity Fair for ITV which stars Ready Player One’s Olivia Cooke. She is also busy working on Keeley Hawes’ two-part drama titled Honour.
