Karen Moncrieff to direct film adaptation of Alice Sebold’s memoir Lucky
According to Deadline, 13 Reasons Why director Karen Moncrieff has been tapped to helm the upcoming drama film adaptation of author Alice Sebold’s best-selling memoir titled Lucky which centers on the aftermath of Sebold’s horrific sexual assault. The project will be produced by James Brown (Still Alice) with filming scheduled to begin in the fall.
“I’m excited to tell this unflinching, true story of a fierce rape survivor and her battle to become the person and writer she always intended to be. Alice’s courage, wit, and willingness to remake her shocking personal trauma into moving and redemptive art are incredibly inspiring to me,” Moncrieff said..
“Karen’s work on ‘Lucky’ achieves what every great adaptation should, staying true to Alice’s memoir while imbuing it with the cinematic tension of a nail-biting thriller,” Brown said.

Lucky was first published in 1999 which had sold over a million copies. The memoir chronicles how Sebold’s life was transformed when she was brutally raped and beaten in a park near campus as an 18-year-old college freshman. While reporting the crime to the police, she was astonished when they remarked how a young woman had recently been murdered in the same location, and therefore she was “lucky.” Because of her indomitable spirit, she fought hard to secure her rapist’s arrest and conviction while she come to terms with a world that has forever been altered.
The film adaptation was also penned by Moncrieff with Skywolf Media’s Lisa Wolofsky and Fortitude’s Nadine de Barros set to executive produce and fully finance the film. Fortitude will be responsible for handling the international sales.

Sebold is best known for her best-selling and critically-acclaimed 2002 novel The Lovely Bones which was adapted into film by director Peter Jackson. The film was consist of a star-studded cast that includes Award-winning actors Saoirse Ronan, Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci.
