Hulu orders Syrian civil war drama led by James Purefoy
The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that Hulu has ordered the Syrian civil war drama Fertile Crescent starring The Following‘s James Purefoy for an eight-episode straight-to-series order.

The series, co-created by False Flag‘s Maria Feldman and Amit Cohen, When Heroes Fly‘s Eitan Mansuri and Euphoria‘s Ron Leshem, follows Antoine, a young French man in search for his estranged sister in the midst of the Syrian civil war. During his search, Antoine teams up with a unit of Kurdish female fighters, fierce women and ISIS’ biggest nightmare, and journey with them into the terrorist organization’s territory, crossing paths with adventurers, anarchists, spies and innocent victims along the way. The story will aim to provide a new look on the tragic events in the war-torn country and how it affects those around the world.
“From the moment we read the initial scripts, we were blown away and leaped at the opportunity to jump onboard,” Hulu vp content development Jordan Helman said in a statement. “We look forward to partnering with this incredibly talented team to bring this bold and provocative vision to life.”
The series will be written by Cohen and Leshem alongside Xabi Molia with all eight episodes directed by Oded Ruskin (False Flag) and will be produced through Masha Productions, Spiro Films, Haut et Court TV, Fremantle, Arte France and Versus Production.

“We feel fortunate to write about a world of brave women who change history, and to deal with captivating personal stories, while exploring one of the most tragic, heartbreaking events in recent decades. We are extremely excited to work on this show with such a talented, devoted and passionate team from all over the world,” co-creators Cohen and Leshem said in a joint statement.
In addition to Purefoy, the series will star Félix Moati (The French Dispatch), Mélanie Thierry (La Douleur), Souheila Yacoub, Joe Ben Ayed, James Floyd, Dean Ridge, Julia Faure, François Caron and Céline Samie.
After finding early success on the big and small screens with roles in the video game adaptation Resident Evil, A Knight’s Tale and Rome, Purefoy landed critically-lauded lead roles in Fox’s The Following, Sundance TV’s Hap and Leonard and Netflix’s Altered Carbon. He was most recently seen in the Netflix British dramedy Sex Education alongside Asa Butterfield (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files).
