E3 2019: Annapurna Interactive uncovers upcoming game, ’12 Minutes’

The Xbox press conference was filled with numerous video games being debuted. Shoveled in between the biggest and most anticipated games was a small independent game called “12 Minutes.” What made it stand out from the rest of the other games announced was its overhead playstyle and intriguing storyline.

In 12 Minutes, you’ll play the role of a husband who’s having a romantic evening with his wife. Suddenly, barging into your home is a police detective who accuses your wife of murder and proceeds to beat you until your last breath. You immediately wake up back to the moment with your wife just before the detective breaks in. You relive the beating again, only to discover that you’re stuck in a time loop that lasts for 12 minutes. Stuck in this repeating nightmare, you use your newfound knowledge of future events to break yourself out of the time loop.

Published by Annapurna Interactive, a subsidiary of Annapurna Pictures, 12 Minutes is described as an “interactive narrative that blends the dream-like suspense of THE SHINING with the claustrophobia of REAR WINDOW and the fragmented structure of MEMENTO.” The game is developed by a small team that is led by Creative Director Luis Antonio. 12 Minutes is written by Stephen Bell and J Brett Vandermale whose past works include Samsung’s “The Night Before VR” ride and the upcoming Sci-Fi comic “Thea” from Otherly Productions.

The trailer for “12 Minutes” opens with the husband and wife having dinner when the wife wants to surprise the husband with a gift, she asks him to guess what he thinks it is, and in disturbing detail, he tells her what the exact gift is. Tension rises between the two, the wife confused at what her husband is telling her, the husband trying to get rushing to get information from her because he knows what’s coming next. The trailer moves forward, cutting quickly to short scenes of the couple inside their small apartment, both happy and difficult times. The trailer runs just under two and a half minutes, but within that time, the trailer gives you just enough suspense and drama to draw you into the game.

There’s no exact release date set for 12 Minutes just yet, but we can expect to see the game sometime in 2020. You can watch the trailer for the upcoming game below:
