Robert Pattinson has been rumored to play Batman in the upcoming film from Matt Reeves. This is looking to be truer when a recent report revealed that he’s in talks to play the Caped Crusader. Of course, this didn’t go well with some fans out there, with petitions popping up that wants him out as Bruce Wayne. So what does the actor think about the reports? Well, he has decided to stay quiet about it.
Pattinson has been promoting The Lighthouse at Cannes Film Festival, and he was asked about playing Batman.
“I’m sorry, but I absolutely can’t talk about that,” Pattinson tells Gala, a French magazine.
Of course, this isn’t the first time he was asked that question, and he was definitely prepared for this question.
“I am only answering questions about The Lighthouse,” he said with a smile during another Q&A session at Cannes (via IndieWire).
For now, rumor has it that Pattinson is going through a lot of auditions and tests to see if he’s a right fit for the role of The Dark Knight. This includes putting him in costume to see if the filmmakers like the way he looks in costume, screen tests, readings and meetings. If that really is the case, it would make sense for the actor to keep quiet about his possible role as Bruce Wayne, especially when it’s not a done deal.
There are a few petitions that don’t want Pattinson as Batman, and the biggest one comes from petition creator John Roden with over 5,000 signatures.
“Don’t make the Batfleck mistake again,” Roden wrote. “Don’t do it. For the love of all that is holy, stop trashing the DC Universe.”
Others are still hoping that Armie Hammer would get the role since he’s also being eyed by Warner Bros. and the filmmakers.
The Batman hits theaters on June 25, 2021.
Before then, DC fans can check out Shazam! currently in theaters, The Joker on October 4, 2019; Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020; and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020.
