Game of Thrones has been getting mixed reactions from fans for its eighth and last season. People were excited, sad, angry, happy and/or disappointed with the results of the latest episode, “The Bells.” Well, Star Wars fans who are still happy with what showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have done with the HBO show will be excited about the next Star Wars film after the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It was revealed in a conference call with Disney CEO Bob Iger that the next film will be directed and written by the duo.
Before the reveal, we knew that Rian Johnson was working on his own new Star Wars project with Lucasfilm, and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were working on another. Now we know who’s the next ones up to bat. The conference call was made during the 6th Annual Moffett-Nathanson Media and Communications Summit (yes, that’s a mouthful), and Iger said that the December 16, 2022 release date reserved for a Star Wars movie is indeed the one by Benioff and Weiss.
There have been rumors that the two have been working on a story based on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game by BioWare. If they are indeed working on that universe, the real question is whether this will be a standalone film or a series of films like a trilogy.
For now, fans can expect two Star Wars projects coming from Lucasfilm this year.
The Mandalorian will be premiering when Disney+, Disney’s streaming service, launches in November. It’s developed and written by Jon Favreau and will feature directors Bryce Dallas Howard and Taika Waititi. It stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito, and Carl Weathers.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20, 2019, and it’s directed by J.J. Abrams. It stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac.
