Avengers: Endgame is breaking all kinds of box office records including being the first film to reach $1 billion globally for its opening week. It’s estimated to reach $2 billion soon and is on its way to surpassing Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens for worldwide box office gross. It’s the most anticipated Marvel film that has caused a woman to be rushed to the hospital due to the emotional scenes and a man being beaten up for shouting out spoilers. There are many crowd-pleasing moments in the film, and one of them was the Iron Man scene near the end of the film. Now co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo have spilled the beans that the scene was thought up in the last minute.
Spoilers Ahead
During the Avengers: Endgame Q&A event in Washington DC, Joe and Anthony Russo were present to answer questions about the film. One scene that got a lot of fans excited and emotional was when Thanos and Iron Man were fighting over the Infinity Gauntlet. The latter was able to get the upper hand, and with his last words and a snap of the fingers, he was able to wipe out Thanos and his army.
“I am Iron Man,” Tony Stark said in response to Thanos’ “I am inevitable.”
That line seems like a no-brainer, but as it turned out, the idea for the line came up just a day before shooting the scene thanks to editor Jeff Ford.
“Tony used to not say anything in that moment,” the directors said. “And we were in the editing room going, ‘He has to say something. This a character who has lived and died by quips.’ And we just couldn’t, we tried a million different last lines. Thanos was saying ‘I am inevitable.'”
“And our editor Jeff Ford, who’s been with us all four movies and is an amazing storyteller, said ‘Why don’t we just go full circle with it and say I am Iron Man.’ And we’re like, ‘Get the cameras! We have to shoot this tomorrow.'”
It was also revealed by the Russo Brothers that the scene involving Iron Man’s sacrifice was the last thing shot. To add icing on the cake, the scene was done in the building where Robert Downey Jr. did his first audition as Iron Man. The film definitely has a lot of moments that pay homage to the previous films.
Synopsis: The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”
The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from the screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.
