Godzilla: King of the Monsters post-credits scene gives clue to possible threat in Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla film was the start of the MonsterVerse, and it brought a Godzilla that was menacing and huge. We are introduced to Monarch, a secret scientific organization tasked with studying the giant monsters known as Titans. The film that came after was Kong: Skull Island and that had a post-credits scene featuring Monarch. It showed a painting of the Titans that audiences can expect in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The latter is now out in theaters, but will audiences see something special after the credits have rolled?

Spoilers Ahead for Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Godzilla: King of the Monsters brings iconic Toho monsters like King Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra. There was a scene that revealed Kong roaming around in Skull Island. The film ends with Godzilla defeating Ghidorah and a scene that’s reminiscent of The Lion King. The Titans know who the alpha is and bows down to Godzilla.

During the end credits, headlines from different media outlets show us that the Titans are actually helping out Earth. Endangered species are once again repopulating, plants are back, and other benefits to mother nature.

Once the end credits are over, we are treated with a scene where Charles Dance’s Alan Jonah is visiting a group that’s able to obtain one of King Ghidorah’s three heads. This hints at the eco-terrorist group wanting to revive the dead monster, and the three-headed Titan could be set up as the main villain in Godzilla vs. Kong.

The next film in the MonsterVerse is Godzilla vs. Kong, and if it’s similar to movies like Batman v Superman and Captain America: Civil War, there may be another bigger threat. Godzilla and Kong will definitely fight, but they may settle their differences. But who’s going to be the main antagonist? If the post-credits scene is anything to go by, we could see Ghidorah come back… possibly as Mecha-King Ghidorah.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty has hopes that we will get to see King-Mecha Ghidorah.

“I hope so,” Dougherty tells Nerd Reactor about hoping to see King-Mecha Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla. “I love the Mecha creatures. In some ways, they’re almost like predecessors to The Terminator. What I love about the original Mechagodzilla was that you didn’t know it was a Mechagodzilla. All of a sudden here’s a second Godzilla, and then he got revealed in layers. All of a sudden a chunk of skin got blasted off, and you realize, ‘Oh, there’s something shiny underneath.’ The correct terminology would be Cyber Godzilla. It’s a cyborg. I think the Mecha monsters are a perfect example of Toho just throwing caution in the wind and saying, ‘Fuck it, let’s get weird.'”

The director believes that the future of the MonsterVerse will get weirder.

“I think we’re headed that way,” Dougherty continued. “I think once you embrace Mothra and King Ghidorah – a giant moth and a three-headed golden dragon – you start to cross out of science fiction and head into science fantasy, and embracing sort of the mythological concepts and lost civilizations. So that was a very intentional push on my part to embrace some of the almost wackiness of the original Toho series.”

Godzilla: King of the Monsters Synopsis – The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

The film is directed and written by Michael Dougherty (Krampus) with Zach Shields as the co-screenwriter. It stars Kyle Chandler (Super 8), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Millie Bobby Brown (Netflix’s Stranger Things), Bradley Whiteford (Get Out), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Charles Dance (HBO’s Game of Thrones), Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s Silicon Valley), Aisha Hinds (Star Trek Into Darkness), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), David Strathairn (Godzilla), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Batman Begins), and Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is now in theaters, and Godzilla vs. Kong arrives in theaters on March 13, 2020.
