George R. R. Martin supports David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ Game of Thrones ending

Game of Thrones The Bells

Spoilers Ahead for Game of Thrones

With the season finale of Game of Thrones over, it has left the fanbase split. One fan even created a petition that wants HBO to rehire writers in order to redo the last season. (It has over 1.5 million signatures at the time of this writing.) Some fans didn’t like that Bran Stark became the king of Westeros. Others were disappointed in the Daenerys Targaryen arc, and there are those who felt that Jon Snow got the crappy end of the stick. With a show this big and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wanting to do fewer episodes and not having a book to fall back on, it’s no surprise that the last season has been divisive. Well, the one who started it all, author George R. R. Martin, has something to say about the ending of Game of Thrones.

Martin felt proud of the team behind HBO’s Game of Thrones, and he talks about how he’s busy with other Game of Thrones projects for HBO. Yes, that means it’ll take him longer to finish writing The Winds of Winter.

“It is hard to believe it is over, if truth be told,” Martin wrote on his blog. “The years have gone past in the blink of an eye.”

There are a lot of fans dissatisfied with the way the show ended, and Martin hints at whether the ending of the book will be similar to the show.

“Well… yes. And no,” he said. “And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes.”

Well, that’s pretty much confusing. Martin does defend Benioff and Weiss for trying to cram a lot of material in just 6 episodes.

“I am working in a very different medium than David and Dan, never forget,” the author explained. “They had six hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done… and if more pages and chapters and scenes are needed, I’ll add them. And of course the butterfly effect will be at work as well; those of you who follow this Not A Blog will know that I’ve been talking about that since season one. There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books… so if nothing else, the readers will learn what happened to Jeyne Poole, Lady Stoneheart, Penny and her pig, Skahaz Shavepate, Arianne Martell, Darkstar, Victarion Greyjoy, Ser Garlan the Gallant, Aegon VI, and a myriad of other characters both great and small that viewers of the show never had the chance to meet. And yes, there will be unicorns… of a sort…”

Martin further adds that the question to which version will have the “real” ending is silly.

“How about this? I’ll write it. You read it. Then everyone can make up their own mind, and argue about it on the internet,” he concluded.

As for when The Winds of Winter will be finished? He assures fans that it will be done, but he won’t commit to a date.

“THE WINDS OF WINTER is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done,” he wrote. “I won’t say when, I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself… but I will finish it, and then will come A DREAM OF SPRING.”

As for George R. R. Martin’s busy schedule, he is working on five shows in development for HBO including a Game of Thrones prequel pilot, and not all of them is based on Westeros. He’s also working on two projects for Hulu, one for the History Channel, and feature films.
