Aladdin tops Memorial Day box office weekend

Aladdin has been met with criticism ever since fans got to see the trailer featuring Will Smith as a CG Genie. The movie has received mixed reviews from critics. However, the audiences are enjoying it with a Cinemascore of A, including us. Now that the weekend is over, the numbers are in, and it’s great news for Disney. Aladdin was able to pull in $85 million for its three-day opening, and if we include the four-day, Memorial Day weekend, it’s estimated to reach over $100 million.

Aladdin was able to beat Solo: A Star Wars Story‘s opening during last year’s Memorial Day weekend. It’s estimated that the live-action remake will make over $110 million for the 4-day weekend, and this is definitely a good sign for Disney’s live-action remakes. It’s certainly better than the projected $60-70 million three-day weekend gross from analysts. With a production budget of $183 million, it’s looking to be a success at the box office in the long run.

The film also opened internationally in major markets except for Japan, which will see a release on June 7th. So far it has earned an estimated $121 million, giving it a total of $207 million at the box office globally. The film opened with $18.7 million in China, $9.2 million in Mexico, $8.4 million in UK, $6.6 million in Italy, $6.5 million in Korea, $6.4 million in Russia, $5.4 million in Australia, $4.9 million in Indonesia, $4.8 million in Spain, $4.6 million in Brazil, $3.8 million in France, $3.6 million in Germany, and $3.4 million in the Philippines.

Film Synopsis: A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future.

The film is directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes) and written by John August (Dark Shadows, Big Fish). It stars Will Smith (Independence Day, Men in Black) as the Genie; Mena Massoud (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”) as Aladdin; Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) as Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express) as Jafar, Navid Negahban (“Legion”) as the Sultan, Nasim Pedrad (“Saturday Night Live”) as Dalia, Billy Magnussen (Into the Woods) as Prince Anders, and Numan Acar (The Great Wall) as Hakim.
