Aladdin fans rip Will Smith’s version of ‘Prince Ali’ to pieces

Aladdin Prince Ali Genie Will Smith

Will Smith is playing Genie in the live-action Aladdin film. The casting was initially met with negativity, but fans soon warmed up to him with new clips and TV spots. And then the clip featuring Will Smith’s performance of “Prince Ali” was released online, and fans reverted back to hating on the movie.

The original “Prince Ali” song performed by Robin Williams was energetic, fun and a visual feast. We get to see the city of Agrabah come to life as the crowd go crazy for the new prince. And then there’s the live-action version with Will Smith where the performance is a bit slower and bland. It doesn’t help that you can hear the autotune in Will Smith’s voice.

Check out the clip below.

Here’s the animated film’s version for comparison.

Some fans know that actors portraying Genie have a lot to live up to since Robin Williams’ role as the animated Genie is so iconic. A live-action version could take things to a new level, and fans of the Aladdin Broadway Musical know this with James Monroe Iglehart as Genie. Hell, even Genie in Disney California Adventure’s Aladdin had its own fun twist on the character that became an instant fan-favorite.

Fans have chimed in on social media, showing their disappointment with the live-action rendition.

Here’s a sarcastic response to the “Strong as 10 regular men” part.

One fan felt depressed after watching the clip.

Film Synopsis: A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future.

The film is directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes) and written by John August (Dark Shadows, Big Fish). It stars Will Smith (Independence Day, Men in Black) as the Genie; Mena Massoud (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”) as Aladdin; Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) as Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express) as Jafar, Navid Negahban (“Legion”) as the Sultan, Nasim Pedrad (“Saturday Night Live”) as Dalia, Billy Magnussen (Into the Woods) as Prince Anders, and Numan Acar (The Great Wall) as Hakim.

Aladdin hits theaters on May 24, 2019.
