The Suicide Squad film from director James Gunn was first thought to be a reboot. With reports of Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis and Joel Kinnaman returning as Harley Quinn, Boomerang, Amanda Waller and Rick Flag, respectively, it sounds like it’s going to be a proper sequel. Now we have a report that John Cena is in talks to join the upcoming DC film.
John Cena is being eyed to join the Suicide Squad cast, and he’ll be joining Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok), according to Variety. Elba was reportedly going to play Deadshot, but his role will be a different character instead. We have no news yet on who Elba will be playing. As for Cena, it’s said that his character was originally planned for Dave Bautista, but Bautista had to pass due to scheduling conflicts. It’s rumored that Cena will be playing Peacemaker.
The sequel follows the first Suicide Squad film starring Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as the Joker. It’s based on the DC Comics that followed a team of villains forced to work on a government mission set up by Amanda Waller. The film was a box office success for Warner Bros with $746.8 million worldwide. Although the film was panned by critics, audiences enjoyed Suicide Squad and gave it a CinemaScore of B+.
The Suicide Squad sequel is being written and directed by James Gunn, with productions being planned for the fall. The film is set to hit theaters on August 6, 2021. DC fans can look forward to the standalone Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix this October and Margot Robbie’s return as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey 7(and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020.
After Gunn is done with the Warner Bros’ project, he’ll be back at Disney and Marvel Studios to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
