J.J. Abrams says there’s more story to Rey’s parents in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Rey Star Wars

Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi had plot twist after plot twist, each surprising audiences by doing a complete 180 on character moments. Star Wars: The Force Awakens made a big deal about Rey finding Luke’s lightsaber, only to have him toss it aside in The Last Jedi. The Force Awakens teased us about Rey’s background, only to have Kylo say that her parents are nobodies. And then there’s the moment that Rey’s lightsaber gets destroyed. The Last Jedi can be summed up with Kylo’s quote, “Let the past die.”

Well, it looks like director J.J. Abrams is reversing the changes made in Johnson’s film with the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker film. Daisy Ridley said during Star Wars Celebration that the lightsaber she got from Luke lives on. And then there’s the quote, “No one’s ever really gone,” from the teaser trailer that’s pretty much saying that the past isn’t dead. Now we have Abrams saying that the movie will shine more light on Rey’s parents.

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rey’s parents were considered nobodies. Abrams says that he is honoring that, but he says that there’re more to the story.

“I will say that we knew, going into this, that this movie, it had to be a satisfying conclusion,” Abrams responds about whether audiences will know who Rey’s parents are. “And we were well aware that that’s one of the things that’s been out there. I don’t want to say that what happens in Episode 8 [didn’t happen]. We have honored that. But I will say that there’s more to the story than you’ve seen.”

What’s interesting is that Abrams is aiming to deliver a conclusion that will be satisfying. Is this his way of trying to cater to the different fanbases out there, especially the ones who didn’t like The Last Jedi?

The film is written and directed by J.J. Abrams, with Chris Terrio as the co-screenwriter. It stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, and Billy Dee Williams.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
