During their epic CinemaCon presentation, Disney gave fans a little sneak peek at Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Although no real footage was shown, we were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the film.
The sequel sees Maleficent embark on a journey in which she becomes a guardian to Aurora. Along the way, she discovers her maternal love for the young princess. As a result, the film also asks audiences a difficult question: Is she is good enough to be Aurora’s mother? Which is an important question since Maleficent: Mistress of Evil finally sees Prince Phillip ask Aurora to marry her.
So the film becomes a more fantastical and dramatic version of Meet the Parents. Elle Fanning reveals that Maleficent is still wary of the actions of humans. “Aurora and Maleficent love each other so much, but there is a huge divide between them,” she says. So it’s a continuing struggle to trust them even for Aurora.
Yet she has a right to be wary of humans as Queen Ingrith, Prince Phillip’s mother, isn’t the most welcoming of hosts. Not only does she want Aurora to change her ways to be this cookie-cutter princess but she also questions Maleficent as a mother. According to Angelina Jolie, the queen is smart, which in turn makes her formidable. “It’s fun,” she said. Thus, she also has ulterior motives to the things that she says. Bringing unity between the magical realm and humans? Yeah, that’s not happening since she seems to have other things in mind.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil hits theaters on October 18th.
