James Gunn was previously fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to old tweets that came back in the limelight. These were crude jokes about rape and pedophilia, and critics of Gunn found a way to get convince Disney to give the director the boot. However, Gunn has shown that he is a changed man in the eyes of Walt Disney Studios, and he was rehired as the director of the third film. Chris Pratt, who stars as Peter Quill in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, is excited about the decision and said that it was the right move.
“I was so thrilled, so excited. I think it’s the right move, I really stand behind it,” the actor told People. “I’m really proud of Disney for hiring James back and ultimately thrilled for not only us, but also for the fans. I think it’s going to wrap up the trilogy in the best way. And Guardians of the Galaxy are really all about second chances and giving people an opportunity to be their best. We’re a ragtag squad of people coming together and having each other’s back. I think it really worked out the way it was supposed to, and I feel good about it.”
Pratt has been supportive of Gunn since the initial firing and signed an open letter pleading to Disney to bring Gunn back.
During the time of Gunn’s firing, he was picked up by Warner Bros. to helm the sequel to Suicide Squad. This means that Disney and Marvel Studios will have to wait until he’s completely done with The Suicide Squad sequel before he can begin in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
Of course, critics of Gunn weren’t happy about the news. Actor James Wood even shared on social media about how his dissatisfaction with the decision.
Until then, fans will have to wait until Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th to see what happens to the Guardians of the Galaxy. For now, we know that Rocket Raccoon and Nebula are among the survivors. They will band together with the rest of the surviving Avengers to avenge the fallen.
