Black Panther and Captain Marvel became huge hits for Marvel Studios, each making over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. This opened the door for more diverse movies for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studio head Kevin Feige has expressed interest in following in Stan Lee’s footsteps, citing the Marvel icon’s column called “Stan’s Soapbox” where he talks about embracing diverse characters in Marvel. We’re already seeing this with The Eternals casting rumor and the upcoming Shang-Chi film, the superhero film with an Asian as the lead. Now we have Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo adding to the discussion that the next phase of the MCU will be more inclusive and diverse.

“The future of these movies will be an inclusive one,” Russo said. “Diversity, both in front of and behind the camera, will be its gold standard.”

There is a rumor that Marvel Studios is looking to cast a gay actor to play a lead character in The Eternals, who is speculated to be Hercules. This, of course, has caused a group to create a petition that demands Feige and Marvel Studios to stop introducing a gay superhero on the big screen. The petition has reached its goal with over 10,000 signatures.

With Shang-Chi, Marvel Studios is focusing on bringing in Asian and Asian-American talent with Destin Daniel Cretton as director and Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Jean-Claude Van Johnson) as the writer. As for The Eternals, Chloé Zhao is attached as the director.

The Eternals was created by Jack Kirby and follows a group of immortal beings created by Celestials. Angelina Jolie is reportedly playing Cersi, an Eternal, who has lived among the humans.

Shang-Chi is known as the Master of Kung Fu. He first appeared in December 1973 in Special Marvel Edition #15 and was created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin, who wrote the Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War comic book series. In the comics, Shang-Chi was born and raised in China and learned martial arts from his father and teachers. It turns out that his father is actually a villain, and he will have to stop his father from taking over the world.

It’s great that Marvel studio wants to be more inclusive, as long as they can keep telling interesting stories that can captivate audiences worldwide.
