Vera Farmiga says Godzilla: King of the Monsters passes Bechdel Test

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is going to be an epic film featuring Titans like Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Of course, what’s a kaiju film without humans being traumatized by these giant creatures? It will star Vera Farmiga as Dr. Emma Russell, a scientist affected by the destruction of Godzilla and the MUTOs in the first film by Gareth Edwards. In a recent interview, Farmiga talks about her character’s family dynamic, a woman’s touch being effective and Godzilla: King of the Monsters passing the Bechdel test.

“I think first and foremost she’s a mother coping with grief and the absolutely devastating impact that the San Francisco attack had on her family,” Farmiga said. “Her family was broken. It was shattered in the wake of that attack. And that’s where she’s operating from. The trauma of that attack has changed her acutely and profoundly.”

In the movie, Emma is the inventor of the Orca, a machine that allows Monarch to talk to the Titans. She talks about how all these powerful weapons are useless and how a different approach will work on the kaijus.

“What’s really cool for me (is) you man’s most powerful weapons, and they’re rendered absolutely useless against the Titan invaders,” she continued. “Man has harnessed fire, but his military weapons, his superguns, the lasers… the deadliest are absolutely ineffectual against the kaijus. So what does it take? It takes the gentle strategy and nurturing touch of a woman. And I get to play that woman, which I thought was really cool… It’s a peaceful technology.”

Emma’s daughter in the film is Madison, played by Stranger Things’ Mille Bobby Brown. Farmiga talks about how the sequel focuses on a mother and daughter compared to the first film’s focus on a father and son.

“The previous Godzilla really focused on the relationship of a father and a son,” Farmiga said. “At the heart of our film is this relationship between a mother and daughter. It might be one of the first Godzillas that passes that Bechdel Test, from that perspective. Those were important things for me.”

The Bechdel Test sees if a work features women talking to each other where men aren’t the topic.

Synopsis: Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse, an epic action-adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

The film is directed by Mike Dougherty from a screenplay by Dougherty and Zach Shields. It stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, Aisha Hinds, O’Shea Jackson Jr., David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, and Zhang Ziyi.
