The Dark Knight Trilogy returning to theaters for special anniversary screenings

It’s been almost fifteen years since Christopher Nolan delivered the acclaimed trilogy opener of the classic DC Comics hero, Batman Begins, and in honor of the titular hero’s upcoming 80th anniversary, Warner Bros. has announced a return of Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy to the big screen in five cities for all-day special screenings.

Starting on March 30, Warner Bros. is hosting a special one-day screening of all three of the acclaimed films back-to-back in a specialized 70mm IMAX format, Nolan’s preference, with an interlude between the second and third films featuring a moderated Q&A session with the mastermind behind the series, Christopher Nolan himself.

The first screening will be held at the Universal City AMC at CityWalk Hollywood, California, followed by April 13 screenings at AMC Lincoln Square in New York City and AMC Metreon and concluding with April 20 screenings at Cinesphere Ontario Place, Toronto, and the IMAX Theatre at the Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis. The screenings outside of Hollywood will all feature the footage of Nolan’s Q&A session from the inaugural screening.

“Christopher Nolan broke new ground with the Dark Knight Trilogy, and this is a rare chance for today’s audiences to experience these extraordinary films as they were meant to be seen,” WB President of Domestic Distribution Jeff Goldstein said. “To have the added privilege of hearing Chris’s insights firsthand makes this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

After the critical and commercial failure of 1997’s Batman & Robin, Warner Bros. began development on a reboot of the DC franchise and found the perfect match in Nolan, who was just coming off of the acclaimed mystery thriller Memento, and David S. Goyer, who had delivered hits for Warner Bros. subsidiary New Line Cinema including the Blade trilogy. In looking to tell Batman’s origin story as no adaptation prior had while delivering a darker and more realistic tone, Batman Begins proved to be a large success, grossing over $375 million worldwide and garnering very positive reviews from critics, spawning two sequels, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Over a decade later, The Dark Knight still proves to be arguably one of the best superhero films of all time amongst audiences and critics alike, with the film receiving rave reviews and being nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning two for Best Sound Editing and Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger posthumously, and grossed $1.005 billion at the global box office.

Tickets for the screenings will go on sale on March 13 at 9 a.m. and fans will receive a special lanyard and Dark Knight trilogy collectible with their tickets.
