Even though we already have The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, there’s always room for more stories in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien and Middle-earth. Amazon Prime Video is working on bringing another live-action Lord of the Rings series set in the Second Age, and Fox Searchlight will have a biopic of the English author in theaters. A new trailer has been last week, and it gives you an idea of how crazy and emotional Tolkien’s life is.
The trailer takes you back in time to the early 20th century, where Tolkien finds love, friendship, and the horrors of war. We get a taste of his love of language, his bonding of art with others, and his relationship with Edith Bratt, the inspiration for Luthien from the Silmarillion book.
It should be interesting to see how Tolkien’s journey will help inspire the world of Middle-earth, especially if Catholicism will have a part in the biopic. He was a devout Catholic after all, and readers can see how religion has influenced the creation of his fantasy world with beings like Eru Ilúvatar having similarities to God and the Valars having similarities to the angels.
Synopsis: Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.
The film is directed by Dome Karukoski from a screenplay by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford. It stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class), Lily Collins (Mirror Mirror), Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, Laura Donnelly, Genevieve O’Reilly, Pam Ferris and Derek Jacobi.
Tolkien hits theaters on May 10, 2019.
