It was revealed yesterday that the deal with Disney and Fox has been completed, with the acquisition becoming effective this morning. Ryan Reynolds shared an image of Deadpool wearing a Micky Mouse hat, and it looks like he’s ready for a new beginning. For Marvel fans, that means they’ll get to see the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first sign of the deal becoming official is the new Walt Disney Company site layout.
If you visit The Walt Disney Company website, you’ll see a banner image featuring shows and movies from Disney and Fox. It’s interesting to see characters from the two studios on the website like Star Wars’ Rey, Toy Story’s Woody, Avatar’s Jake, Captain Marvel, Bart Simpson, Deadpool, Mickey Mouse, Atlanta’s Earnest “Earn” Marks, Frozen’s Elsa and more.
Deadpool fans were worried about the future of the franchise, and with Deadpool being shown prominently in the banner, the Merc with a Mouth isn’t going anywhere. Disney CEO Bob Iger assured fans that Deadpool will still get to keep its R-rating. However, the character won’t be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iger doesn’t want to confuse families.
“We do believe there is enough room for the Fox properties to exist without significant Disney influence over the nature of the content,” Iger said. “Meaning that we see there is certainly popularity amongst Marvel fans for the R-rated Deadpool films. For instance, we’re going to continue in that business and there might be room for more of that. There’s nothing that we’ve really seen in the Fox library or activities that Fox is engaging in today that would be of concern to us as long as we’re very carefully branding them and making sure that we’re not in any way confusing the consumer with product that would be Disney product or the more traditional Marvel product.”
“The notion of the characters coming back is great, Feige said. “It’s nice when a company that created all these characters can have access to all those characters. It’s unusual not to. But in terms of actually thinking about it and actually planning things, we haven’t started that yet.”
Another huge franchise in the works is James Cameron’s Avatar sequels. The director already has a relationship with Disney before with Disney World’s Pandora – The World of Avatar. With the films being under Disney, it’ll be easier for the company to use the characters.
Marvel Studios is busy working on sequels to its previous films like Black Panther along with films featuring new heroes in the MCU like Shang-Chi and The Eternals. The latter reportedly will feature a gay superhero lead, which resulted in a petition being created demanding Marvel Studios to think of the children. With all these films in the works, will there be room for X-Men and Fantastic Four in the next phase? It’s likely that the fans will have to wait a bit longer, but here’s hoping that we’ll see them interact with the Avengers sooner.
