Before their first venture with the streaming service has even premiered, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are teaming up with Netflix once again with the upcoming adaptation of the George Saunders short story Spiderhead, and Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has signed on to helm the project, according to Deadline.

The film, penned by the Zombieland and Deadpool screenwriters, is set in a near future where convicts can shorten their sentences by volunteering as medical test subjects, but when one prisoner becomes the test subject of a medicine that generates feelings of love, he finds himself questioning the world around him and the truth about his emotions.

Kosinski, who made his directorial debut with 2010’s long-awaited sci-fi sequel Tron: Legacy, is currently filming Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 action classic with Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible – Fallout) and Val Kilmer (The Snowman) reprising their roles from the original. Once he is finished filming the sequel, which is set to wrap in April, he will begin the casting process for Spiderhead.

The film is set to be produced by Jeremy Steckler (The Old Man and the Gun) for Condé Nast Entertainment, Eric Newman (Narcos: Mexico) for Screen Arcade, as well as Reese and Wernick. The writing partners, who have been working together for over 10 years since their first collaboration Zombieland, have been behind many franchise tentpole hits, including 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation and bringing the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool, to the big screen in acclaimed fashion.

Their next projects include the Michael Bay ensemble action pic, 6 Underground, which wrapped filming last month and is set to debut on Netflix sometime later this year, and Zombieland: Double Tap, the highly-anticipated sequel to their 2009 debut, which is slated to hit theaters on October 11.
