Pokémon Detective Pikachu is coming to theaters this year, and it’ll feature Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Detective Pikachu. (Sorry for those of you wanting Danny DeVito to reprise his role.) Warner Bros. has released a new trailer, and fans will be delighted to see a lot of different Pokémon creatures grace the screen. And with Reynolds as the voice of Detective Pikachu, you can expect a fun time with the beloved Nintendo creatures in the upcoming live-action adventure. And if you ever wanted to hear Pikachu say “hell”, well this is it.
There are a lot of Pokémon critters in the trailer including Snorlax, Machamp, Ivysaur, Jigglypuff and Mewtwo, which you can see near the end.
Synopsis: The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.
The film is directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps, Monsters Vs. Aliens) and written by Dan Hernandez & Benji Samit and Rober Letterman and Derek Connolly from a story by Dan Hernandez & Benji Samit and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy). It stars Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as Time, Kathryn Newton (Lady Bird, Big Little Lies) as Lucy, Suki Waterhouse (Insurgent), Omar Chaparro (Overboard), Chris Geere (Modern Family), Ken Watanabe (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Last Samurai) and Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest).
The movie is based on the popular Pokémon franchise that spawned video games, trading card games, toys, and anime television series and animated movies. Pokémon Go, the AR game where you can catch Pokémon by venturing out into the real world, became a global phenomenon.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu hits theaters on Friday, May 10, 2019.
