Liam Neeson, known for Taken and Batman Begins, was under fire from the social media crowd for his revenge story that made people think he’s a racist. Now the actor has appeared on Good Morning America to say that he’s “not a racist” while also wanting to open up about his actions.
During a recent interview, Neeson mentioned that he came back from travel a while back, only to hear about a loved one being raped.
“She handled the situation of the rape in the most extraordinary way,” Neeson said. “But my immediate reaction was… I asked, did she know who it was? No. ‘What color were they?’ She said it was a black person.”
And that’s what made people very upset, calling him a racist for his past actions that happened 40 years ago. In his Good Morning America appearance today, he spoke with Robin Roberts about not being a racist. He said that he knew his actions were bad and that he sought help for his uncontrollable thirst for revenge.
“I went out deliberately into black areas in the city, looking to be set upon so I could unleash physical violence,” Neeson said. “I did it maybe four or five times. It shocked me and it hurt me…. I did seek help, I went to a priest.”
He admitted that his actions were wrong and described it as something from the medieval days.
“I was trying to show honor, to stand up for my dear friend in this terrible, medieval fashion. I am a fairly intelligent guy and that’s why it kind of shocked me when I came down to Earth after having these horrible feelings.”
Roberts asked Neeson if he would have lashed out at a black person if that person came up to him, he said, “Yes.” The thing that he wanted to get out of this is to open up discussion about hatred and looking for a fight. His friend mentioned that if it was a person of another color, whether black or white, he would have acted the same for that group.
