Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings is happening, and its official Twitter account has posted a new map of Middle-earth with captions teasing the seven dwarf-lords. Additionally, a new website has launched on Amazon where you can download or view the map in high resolution. This could mean a lot of things including the first alliance of Gondor and Rohan during the Third Age or the creating of the Rings of Powers during the Second Age.
By looking at the map, all the lands are there like Mordor, Harad, Eriador, Khand, and etc. However, Calenardhon is where Rohan should be. What’s the deal? Well, that’s because this map was before the time of the Rohirrim. In the films, Karl Urban (Dredd, Star Trek) played Éomer, the future king of Rohan. So if the map is a hint, we might see how Gondor teamed up with the pre-Rohirrim people known as Éothéod, the Northmen who helped Gondor fight against invaders. With that said, one can assume that the Amazon series will be taking place during the Third Age, the time of Cirion, who was the twelfth Ruling Steward of Gondor and Eorl the Young, the founder of Rohan.
It could also be taking place way before in the Second Age when the Rings of Powers came to be? Why else would the caption be ” Seven for the Dwarf-Lords in their halls of stone”?
However, Calenardhon was a part of Gondor, and since Gondor isn’t listed, I would place my bet on the series exploring the time of the Éothéod and Gondorians’ first alliance. Then again, it could also mean that it takes place before Gondor.
A previous rumor said that we would be seeing a young Aragorn, but with this tease, it looks like we’re going to go further back.
JD Payne and Patrick McKay, who are both attached as writers for Star Trek 4, are writing for The Lord of the Rings series. Amazon is very confident in the show since it’s announced that it would have five seasons with a rumored budget of $1 billion. If that’s the case, expect a lot of epic fantasy scenes.
