Jake Gyllenhaal reveals why he decided to play Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man Far From Home Jake Gyllenhaal Mysterio

Jake Gyllenhaal is finally joining the superhero genre with Spider-Man: Far From Home. There was a time when he would have taken over Tobey Maguire’s spot as Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2, but Maguire recovered and the rest is history. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Gyllenhaal is playing Mysterio, and with the release of the trailer, we get a good look at his character and his outfit that’s pretty faithful to the comic book. During an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor reveals why he finally decided to join the superhero movie club.

“I would have loved to,” Gyllenhaal explains to Colbert on why he didn’t do a superhero movie before. “This was the shot.”

Colbert pressed him about whether Mysterio is a good or bad guy since he’s known as a villain in the comic books. Gyllenhaal couldn’t say anything, but it seems like he’s trying to be a hero from the looks of the Far From Home trailer.

“I guess the movies I make are a little weird. It is different and it’s really fun, I was looking for a role in a space that felt like I could do something with it – and I did something with it. I don’t know how good I did with it but I did something with it. It’s very exciting.”

Check out the video interview below as the two joke about seeing Colbert’s junk, and Gyllenhaal showing Colbert an interview he did with Maggie Gyllenhaal and saying that she is the better Gyllenhaal. It’s an awkward yet entertaining interview.

Jon Watts, who directed Spider-Man: Homecoming, returns to direct the sequel. The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Zendays as MJ, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Marisa Tomei as May Parker, Jacob Batalon as Ned, and Jake Gyllenhaal as Quentin Beck/Mysterio.

Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 5, 2019.
