Disney to work on live-action remake of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Hunchback of Notre Dame

Disney isn’t showing any signs of slowing down when it comes to turning its animated films into live-action remakes. This year alone audiences will see three live-action remakes with Aladdin, Dumbo and The Lion King. There’s still Mulan and Maleficent 2 on the horizon. Now we have reports that the House of Mouse is working on remaking The Hunchback of Notre Dame as a live-action musical with Josh Gad starring. The story features Quasimodo, an outcast who lives alone high above in the bell tower of Notre Dame.

The upcoming live-action film has a tentative title of Hunchback, according to Deadline. It’s reported that David Henry Hwang is going to write the script. He’s a Tony-winning stage playwright responsible for M. Butterfly, Chinglish, Golden Child, The Dance, and the Railroad.

Gad is reportedly going to play Quasimodo. The actor is no stranger to Disney films since he voiced Olaf in Frozen and played Le Fou in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. He’s also attached as producer according to reports.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame animated film featured dark and catchy songs, and it looks like the remake will feature music from composer Alan Menken (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas) and lyricist Stephen Schwartz (The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas).

The film is definitely going to be inspired by the animated film and the novel by Victor Hugo, who also wrote Les Miserables.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the tale of Quasimodo, a disfigured bell-ringer of the Notre Dame Cathedral who lives in isolation in France. He meets Esmeralda, a gypsy woman who seeks sanctuary inside the church, and he discovers a passion for joining the outside world. However, Frollo is always present to make things a nightmare for the gypsy population and Quasimodo.

Disney’s previous live-action remakes include Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Pete’s Dragon, and Alice in Wonderland.

The Lion King hits theaters on July 19th of this year, with Aladdin on May 24th, and Dumbo on March 29th.
