Biopic with Zac Efron as Ted Bundy causes outrage and Venom fans vs Bundy fans

A new movie based on Ted Bundy is coming to theaters, with Zac Efron playing the psychopathic killer. It already premiered during Sundance Film Festival, but a new trailer has been released that has caused outrage due to its tone. Bundy was a serial killer who performed heinous acts of murder, rape and kidnapping. However, the combination of his charm and good looks has allowed him to kill under the radar. The trailer for Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile has a light and energetic tone, which is a stark contrast to the real person. In addition, it has caused an internet fight between Venom fans and Bundy fans.

One person wrote, “Can we not sexualize Ted Bundy? He raped, murdered, and decapitated women and had sex with their dead bodies. Not here for this hyper-sexualized Zac Efron film. I know the youth of twitter will obsess over him, and I’d prefer not to read thirst tweets about a serial murderer.”

Another wrote, “I feel so bad for the families of the victims that have to sit there and see their terrors revived as a witty romantic thriller.”

There are those who see the film’s take on the killer as a way to show that looks can be deceiving.

“I’ve seen a few people missing the point of this trailer,” wrote another. “The reason the trailer seems to be painting him as this charismatic good guy is because Ted Bundy was a very charismatic, nice all American guy who no one suspected.”

Director Joe Berlinger agreed by retweeting the post.

Kathy Kleiner Rubin, a survivor who was attacked by Ted Bundy at Florida State University’s Chi Omega house in 1978, has also spoken. In a video via TMZ, she said that the film isn’t a problem as long as people know who Bundy really was.

“I don’t have a problem with people looking at it, as long as they understand that what they’re watching wasn’t a normal person,” Rubin said. “I believe that in order to show him exactly the way it was, it’s not really glorifying him, but it’s showing him, and when they do say positive and wonderful things about him, that’s what they saw — that’s what Bundy wanted you to see.”

“Hopefully it will make women … more aware of their surroundings and be cautious,” Rubin continued. “He had different tactics that he used to [get] people to help him get in cars or do things, and in your gut if you just feel that something doesn’t feel right, just say no.”

Zac Efron has told Variety that he doesn’t want people interpreting his performance as something different.

“I feel a responsibility to make sure that this movie is not a celebration of Ted Bundy,” he said. “Or a glorification of him. But, definitely, a psychological study of who this person was. In that, there’s honesty.”

Berlinger mentioned that he wanted Efron because of his background as a heartthrob.

“He has 37 million followers on Instagram and he’s one of the main heartthrobs for a certain age of young female,” the director said. “Because Bundy’s character is so wrapped up in his sex appeal and charm, I loved the idea of subverting Zac’s sex appeal and charm.”

And then there’s this whole fighting between Venom stans and Ted Bundy stans (obsessed fans). To be honest, I didn’t dig deeper than what’s seen below because it’s on a whole other level. All I’ll say is this. I’m a fan of the Joker and know that he’s a psychotic killer, but he’s a fictional character. Ted Bundy isn’t.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Evil will be coming to theaters.
