Aquaman’s James Wan once pitched a Blade reboot

With Aquaman breaking pre-sales records and eyeing a possible $65 million U.S. debut, director James Wan looks to be doing pretty well for his superhero movie debut. But it wasn’t the first superhero movie the filmmaker wanted to get his hands on.

Speaking with the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via SlashFilm), the man who helmed The Conjuring reveals he once pitched a reboot of Blade, the Marvel trilogy of vampire movies that starred Wesley Snipes.

A couple of years back, I think it was right after Conjuring 1 that I went into a particular studio and told them ‘Hey, I’m a big fan of Blade. Would you guys be interested in rebooting Blade?’ So that was one. Obviously, nothing came out of that! But that was my first intro into looking at potential comic book properties,” Wan explained.

An accomplished horror director, Wan seems like a perfect fit to tell the story of the eponymous Blade, a half-human/half-vampire who spends his nights killing off vampires. And he might have had a great approach for a reboot, but he doesn’t remember what it was.

It was just to kind of talk about it. I didn’t have a full presentation. I did have an idea, I can’t quite remember what it was. That’s how far back it was and I’ve done a lot since then so I can’t quite remember what I had thought of. But I did like it at the time,” said Wan.

We might never know what Wan’s idea was for a Blade reboot, but if Aquaman does the well at the box-office, and there’s little reason to think it won’t, who knows what his future holds. Blade, the Marvel trilogy that predates the MCU, has been the subject of conversation for years, though nothing has come of it as yet.

Meanwhile, Aquaman, Wan’s underwater epic starring Jason Momoa (Justice LeagueGame of Thrones) as the title character, will tell the story of the half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime. It’s a journey that will not only force him to face who he really is, but discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be… a king.

Aquaman opens on December 21 in theaters everywhere.
