Sony working on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel and all-female spinoff

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse isn’t even out yet, but we now have reports saying that Sony Pictures Animation is already planning ahead with two new film projects. One will be the sequel to the animated film while the other will be a spin-off film with an all-female cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has three directors, but for the next film, Joaquim Dos Santos is being considered for helming the sequel. He is known for being the co-showrunner of Netflix’s Voltron as well as directing and storyboarding episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Lauren Montgomery, who is also the showrunner for Netflix’s Voltron as well as the director for the animated films Wonder Woman and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, is being eyed for the all-female project. Sony has plans of bringing together many of Spider-Man’s female heroes into one film. Ben Smith (CBS’ Zoo) is attached to write the script.

Amy Pascal, who has produced Spider-Man: HomecomingSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Venom, is back as the producer for the upcoming films. Phil Lord and Chris Miller helped to bring Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to life, but no news on whether they’ll be back for these projects. Avi Arad is likely going to be back as co-producer.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has all the makings of sequels, so we’ll have to wait and see how the story will continue. There is no information on the all-female spinoff, but one can assume that Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Girl and Madame Web will be making appearances. With Venom making over $800 million worldwide, you can bet that Sony is going to milk everything from Spider-Man’s universe. Perhaps we’ll get a Venom 2 with Carnage appearing.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follows Miles Morales, a New York teenager who will realize his true potential as the hero the city needs. He will meet with other heroes including Spider-Man, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, and Spider-Man Noir.

Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on December 14, 2018.
