Sony passes on E3 2019 due to lack of games

Gamers have been excited each year to see Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo square off during E3 Expo. Well, next year, Sony is skipping out on E3 2019, and audiences won’t be seeing a Sony Media Briefing or its presence during the event. Some will be surprised, and others will notice a pattern. So why is Sony skipping out on E3? Do they have nothing big to show?

Sony has been a big part of E3 since it began. It was very subtle, but during the Entertainment Software Association’s announcement of the upcoming show, it stated that Nintendo and Microsoft were making appearances with Sony being MIA.

Sony has revealed to Variety why it’s not showing off anything for E3 2019:

“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community. PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”

E3 premiered in 1995, and this is the first time Sony is stepping out of the spotlight at the event. There were signs before like Sony not hosting PlayStation Experience in 2018 due to the company not having a lot of games to show off.

2018 has been a big year for Sony with exclusive games like God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man being praised by critics and fans and selling millions of copies. Today also marks the 5th anniversary for the PlayStation 4, with the console selling over 80 million units worldwide. It’s way behind though when comparing it to the PlayStation 2 sales of over 158 million units. The PlayStation 4 still has upcoming games to look forward to including Days Gone and The Last of Us 2.
