This Is Us Season 3 Episode 3 Recap

Previously on NBC’s This Is Us, Kevin told Randall that Kate was trying to conceive through in vitro fertilization since she was the only one who could pass on a piece of Jack, and Jack watched as Rebecca greeted a man at her doorstep. This episode picks up right where both these stories left off.

At the premiere, audiences loved Kevin’s movie, Hill 400. Press for it was winding down, so he invited Zoe along to his last interview with Terry Gross of NPR. The interview proved troubling for Kevin. He realized that he knew nothing of his father’s time in Vietnam. He remembered a time when Jack reacted to him playing with a toy grenade in a store. Zoe offered to help Kevin track down the people he served with, and at the end of the episode, we see an old man receiving an email from Kevin.

Randall confronted Kate. Not only was he hurt about the implication, Randall was upset that Kate saw adoption as a last resort. Kate ended a call with him abruptly since she felt everyone was treating her like she was about to die. He flew out to Los Angeles to be there for her, but she was already in surgery when he arrived.

After Kate woke up, Randall called Deja back after several missed calls. Sky was in the hospital because someone had jumped her for her phone. Randall wanted to be a “superhero” like Jack was, so he told Beth that he was going to run against Councilman Brown. Beth told Randall that she lost her job.

While Kate was in surgery, she dreamed of her younger selves and her father getting ice cream together. The doctors were having trouble waking her up. The 8-year-old version of her was optimistic and excited as present day Kate told her about Toby. But adolescent Kate was angry and pessimistic, telling present Kate that she would never be a mother. It was too tempting for Kate to stay since Jack was there in her dream. But he understood when she told him she had to leave.

When she finally woke up, the doctor told her they had harvested eight eggs. The surgery was a success.

The man at Rebecca’s doorstep was her ex-boyfriend, Alan Phillips. He had returned from England to persuade her to move to New York with him. However, Rebecca wanted to go to Los Angeles instead. Rebecca was close with his parents, who spoke happily of their marriage.

Heartbroken, Jack had gone home to his father abusing his mother. He took his mother to stay with a friend, but on the way, they stopped at a store and ran into Rebecca. She asked him about his dreams, and he said he wanted a decent job, a wife, and a family. Rebecca talked with Mrs. Phillips about Jack, and while they had different dreams, she still had a feeling. She tracked Jack down, and they washed dishes together before Rebecca proposed taking a drive together to Los Angeles.
