Project 1v1 is the arena shooter we need

At this year’s E3, gamers were hoping that the game Gearbox was hiding would be Borderlands 3. Fortunately, it wasn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Borderlands fan and I can’t wait for the next one, but I got to see something else that I’m looking forward to from Gearbox. It’s called Project 1v1 (working title), and it’s an arena shooter coming to PC (for now). The name itself implies the true nature of the game, a 1v1 deathmatch setting. There’s a lot more to it than just that though. Integrated within Project 1v1 is a sort of collectible card game.

Now you’re probably thinking this sounds really weird and I admit that it does, but trust me, it all works. Before you enter a match you get to choose perks, which are basically the cards you collect as you play. The more cards you have the more varied your loadout can be, but you can only have 3 cards selected at a time per loadout. And just like your specific perks, you can have 2 weapons equipped as well. This means you really have to focus on having complimentary perks to go with whichever weapons you choose.

Along with weapons and perks, you can customize your character in many ways as well. Almost every aspect can be tweaked, the entire wardrobe and even swapping out different heads. Now it is worth noting that the game will be free-to-play, which usually means vanity items may come at a cost. There hasn’t been any specifics released about it as of yet, but that’s our best assumption for now.

Matches take place in a king-of-the-hill style, similar to what you may find in fighting games. While two people are battling it out in the arena, challengers can view the match while waiting in a queue. Each match is a 5 minute round in which players must score as many kills as they can in that time.

The victor continues on to fight the next opponent, while the loser goes to the back of the line. The next person up gets to choose the next map though, so it’s worth getting to know all the maps well. The maps themselves are small, but not too tight and with its fair share of environmental hazards, power-ups and bonus items. Health doesn’t regenerate, so you’ll have to be on the lookout for it.

From the few matches we got to play, it was a lot of fun; very reminiscent of playing Quake and Unreal back in the day. Gearbox hasn’t released much info on the game, but we expect more to surface soon. This includes a release date, and the potential of other platforms. For now though, it’ll release on steam sometime either this year or next. Until then, we’ll just have to wait it out for a potentially great game.

You can check out Project1v1.com for more info as well.
