Director Jon M. Chu ready to adapt Thai rescue story
Hollywood Reporter has stated that Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu is setting up to bring another project about the recent Thai rescue story to the big screen. Chu is teaming up with international production company Ivanhoe Pictures (Ghoul) to bring the sensational rescue story. This announcement comes one day after Pure Flix confirmed their own Rescue project.
Ivanhoe Pictures president John Penotti stated on Wednesday that his production company was selected by the Thai government to produce a film about the 12 Thai soccer players and their coach trapped in a cave after a flash flood in the area. The team became captured within a cave in Thailand on June 23 and survived for 18 long days before being miraculously rescued by a brave group of international divers.
Chu took to Twitter to give his thoughts on this project and said, “I refuse to let Hollywood #whitewashout the Thai Cave rescue story! No way. Not on our watch. That won’t happen or we’ll give them hell. There’s a beautiful story about human beings saving other human beings. So anyone thinking about the story better approach it right & respectfully.”
This will be the second time that Ivanhoe Pictures and Jon M. Chu will be teaming up as their first collaboration, Crazy Rich Asians, will be arriving in theaters on August 15. Ivanhoe Pictures is also bringing the chilling horror series Ghoul to Netflix, debuting on August 24.
