Deadpool 2 is coming to theaters this weekend, and it has been getting a lot of praise from critics. (You can even read our positive review of the film here!) One of the standout roles belongs to Karan Soni, who plays Dopinder, Deadpool’s trusty taxi driver. In the first film, he became a good friend and partner to Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds). This time, the duo have been working together to help Deadpool rid the streets of crime. However, Dopinder wants to be more than just a cab driver. We had the chance to interview Soni about his expanded role.
“Personally it was a lot more fun to actually film the second one. I can’t believe I get to do this or act with this person today,” Soni tells Nerd Reactor about Deadpool 2 and working with the cast.
“I personally was just in awe of Josh Brolin the whole time,” Soni continued. “When we made the first Deadpool, you just don’t think that an actor of that caliber is going to be in a movie like this. And when he came into the movie, I think it’s so perfect with the casting. His character needs to be grounded and real, and Josh is such a good actor. When he came in on the set, the energy just completely changed. We all felt like we had to step it up a little bit. It was just this natural thing that he has.”
Peter is a character seen in the trailer who is an average guy and joins the X-Force. Even Soni was surprised about the addition of the character.
“What’s so interesting about that – I don’t think a lot of people know this – is that all the scenes with Peter and everything were removed from my script. A lot of us didn’t know what was happening because they wanted that sequence to be very secretive. I just remember getting a call sheet for scene 79c, and I’m like, ‘What scene is that? I don’t even have it in the script.’ They were like, ‘It’s a secret scene.’ I show up and Rob Delaney (who plays Peter) was there, and all these other actors were there. I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ It kind of worked perfectly because I am in the scene and so upset. I’m really happy that people are responding to his character.”
Deadpool has an action figure. Does that mean we’ll get to see a Dopinder action figure?
“In these contracts that you sign, there’s a line in there that basically says I will get paid extra if they make an action figure,” said Soni. “I’m just happy that somebody even thought of that for me.”
The first Deadpool film surprised a lot of people with how much money it made for an R-rated comic book flick. With the second one, the team is more prepared for a bigger film.
“When we were making Deadpool 1, it felt like any other movie or TV show,” explained Soni. “It almost felt pretty small compared to these other movies. The second one I felt like I was in a big, big movie. It really felt massive, especially the orphanage stuff at the end of the movie with all the pyrotechnics and all that.”
