Ten years ago the Marvel Cinematic Universe was born with the release of Iron Man. And over those years, the MCU has released 18 films with more than a dozen slated for release. There’s no denying that Marvel has become a cinematic powerhouse, and it’s taken actors, who at first were relatively unknown, and turned them into Hollywood superstars. It’s reignited the “nerd culture”, turning it into the new normal. With the MCU laying the foundation for more movies in the future, it makes us all ask, “Just how long can these aging actors hold on to their beloved characters?”
Just a few weeks ago, Chris Evans confirmed that next year’s untitled ‘Avengers’ movie will be his last. His announcement wasn’t that surprising as most fans knew that Evans had only signed on to play the beloved Captain America for only six films. But what is really surprising to hear is that Robert Downey Jr. is also revealing that next year’s Avenger’s film will also be his last.
In a recent interview with Details Magazine, Downey stated, “The Marvel films have been great for me, but in reality, I think it’s time for my character train to come to an end. And there’s no denying that Tony Stark will go out with a bang.”
Although RDJ has not fully confirmed that next year’s Avengers film will be his last, his list of upcoming MCU films is only confirmed up to next year’s untitled Avengers film. There’s no denying that Downey’s Tony Stark has been in quintessential poster boy of the MCU. He has appeared in more films than any other character and was the catalyst in bringing Spider-Man to the MCU. So it’s a hard pill to swallow to hear that RDJ is hanging up his Iron Man armor so soon.
At this time RDJ’s film credits list Avengers and a Doctor Dolittle movie as just a few of the films to be released in the next year or two. So what does this mean for RDJ and the MCU? Will the man who embodied the “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” so well stay on with the MCU as a producer to help bring in the new age of “Tony Stark” or will he surprise us with just one more Iron Man film? Guess we’ll have to wait to find out.
