The Last Jedi passes the $600M mark, Jumanji plays to another $7.6M

Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm‘s Star Wars: The Last Jedi earned $17.8 million domestically and $18.9 million internationally on Thursday, for a global day of $36.7 million. That means the film is heading into its second weekend with $296.5 million in North America and $314 million overseas. The worldwide total is up to $610.5 million. The Last Jedi is scheduled to open in China on January 5th.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which received an A CinemaScore, was written and directed by Rian Johnson (BrickLooper) and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcoming back cast members Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran. The sequel was produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski.

In second place, Columbia Pictures’ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle took in $7.6 million on Thursday from 3,765 locations for a total of $16.6 million (including special Amazon Prime screenings last Friday). The film took in $7.2 million on opening day Wednesday. The studio believes the film is on track for $30 million for the five-day opening and $45 million for the first six days, which include Christmas day. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle received an A- CinemaScore from audiences.

In the brand-new adventure Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the game has changed as four teenagers in detention are sucked into the world of Jumanji. When they discover an old video game console with a game they’ve never heard of, they decide to play and are immediately thrust into the game’s jungle setting, in the bodies of the avatar characters they chose (Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan). What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji – Jumanji plays you. To win, they’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, or they’ll be stuck in the game forever. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was directed by Jake Kasdan from a script by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers and Scott Rosenberg & Jeff Pinkner.
