Coco box office reaches $280M globally, Disaster Artist opens strong

Disney•Pixar‘s Coco easily won the box office a second-straight weekend with $26.1 million to take its North American total to $108.7 million. Internationally, the film debuted in new markets such as France, Germany, and Spain, and collected another $69 million, for an overseas total of $171.3 million and worldwide sum of $280 million. $75.6 million of the international total has come from China, while the total in Mexico is up to $55.6 million. Directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina, Coco features the voices of Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt, Gael Garcia Bernal, Edward James Olmos, Alanna Ubach, and more.

Warner Bros. Pictures‘ Justice League remained in second place with $16.6 million, taking its domestic total to $197.3 million after three weeks in theaters. The comic book movie added $35.7 million from 20,375 screens in 66 overseas markets, pushing its international total to $370.1 million. The global total so far is $567.4 million, with $98.5 million of that number coming from China alone. Comparing the movie to previous DC Comics films, Man of Steel grossed $668 million worldwide, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice took in $873.3 million, Suicide Squad earned $745.6 million, and Wonder Woman brought in $821.8 million. Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, and J.K. Simmons.

In third place a second week, Lionsgate’s Wonder grossed $12.5 million and is now up to $88 million domestically after three weeks. Overseas, Wonder added $7.8 million from 46 markets and has grossed $12.2 million, for a worldwide total of $100.2 million. Directed by Stephen Chbosky, Wonder stars Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, Jacob Tremblay, Daveed Diggs, and Noah Jupe.

The fourth spot again belonged to Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, which made another $9.7 million domestically and $6.5 million internationally this weekend. The film has now earned $291.4 million in North America and $525 million overseas, for a global total of $816.4 million. The first Thor earned $449.3 million worldwide and Thor: The Dark World took in $644.5 million globally. Made for $180 million, the Taika Waititi-directed Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins.

Rounding out the top five was Paramount Pictures’ Daddy’s Home 2, directed by Sean Anders and starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, John Lithgow, and Mel Gibson. The sequel, produced for $69 million, earned $7.5 million and has earned $82.8 million domestically after four weeks. Internationally, the comedy added $15.6 million this weekend in 49 markets and has now grossed $34 million. In 2015, the first Daddy’s Home earned $150 million domestically and $92.4 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $242.8 million.

20th Century Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express took in $6.7 million in sixth place and has now grossed $84.7 million domestically after four weeks. Overseas, the film made $23.1 million in 68 markets this weekend to take its international sum to $152.7 million and worldwide total to $237.4 million. Made for $55 million and directed by Kenneth Branagh, the adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel features a large ensemble cast that includes Branagh, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, Michael Pena, Judi Dench, Leslie Odom Jr., Tom Bateman, Lucy Boynton, Sir Derek Jacobi, Josh Gad, Penelope Cruz, Sergei Polunin, and Willem Dafoe.

Also, Focus Features’ Lady Bird added $4.5 million from 1,194 theaters and has earned $17 million after five weeks, while Fox Searchlight Pictures’ Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri also added $4.5 million from 1,430 theaters and is up to $13.7 million after four weeks.

Two films impressed in limited release this weekend. James Franco’s The Disaster Artist (A24) was released in 19 theaters, where it earned $1.2 million, an average of $64,254 per location. The award-winning film will expand to approximately 800 screens next weekend. Directed by and starring James Franco, the film co-stars Dave Franco and Seth Rogen. Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water (Fox Searchlight Pictures) debuted in just two theaters, where the film grossed $166,800, or $83,400 per theater. The Shape of Water stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Octavia Spencer.
