Deathstroke, a DC villain, has made a name for himself on the small screen with appearances on The CW’s Arrow and the popular Injustice: Gods Among Us and Batman: Arkham Origins video games. Now we have news that Gareth Evans, the director behind the critically acclaimed and action-packed The Raid and The Raid 2: Redemption, is in talks to helm the Deathstroke movie in the DC Extended Universe. Now this is some amazing news.
If you haven’t seen The Raid films yet, you owe it to yourself if you’re an action movie buff. John Wick and Atomic Blonde have raised the bar for Hollywood action films, and as much as I loved the action in those movies, they still have not been able to match the intensity and ruthlessness of the Raid films. This is all thanks to Gareth Evans freedom in shooting in Indonesia and the help of martial artists and stars like Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian and more. (J.J. Abrams is a fan of the martial artists and actors, which resulted in them having an appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens film.)
The Wrap reports that Evans is in talks to direct the film starring Joe Manganiello, who is still attached to play the mercenary. The site also said that Evans was offered Justice League Dark, but he wasn’t interested and instead pitched Warner Bros. his idea for Deathstroke.
Deathstroke is created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Perez and first appeared in New Teen Titans #2. His real name is Slade Wilson, a mercenary who works for the highest bidder.
He’s the perfect comic book character for a director like Evans since his films have been brutal and powerful. And with the Raid films, he has influenced action movies and shows; for example, the fight scene at the end of Daredevil season 1 episode 2.
Let’s just hope Warner Bros. is confident enough to let Evans do his thing, and that he won’t have a lot of restrictions when it comes to bringing out his formula of action on the big screen.
If you want to check out Evans next movie, Netflix will be releasing Apostle starring Dan Stevens next year.
