War for the Planet of the Apes opens in first to $56.5 million

20th Century Fox‘s War for the Planet of the Apes topped the domestic box office this weekend, earning an estimated $56.5 million from 4,022 theaters, an average of $14,048 per location. The Matt Reeves-directed sequel opened behind Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ $72.6 million from 2014, but slightly ahead of Rise of the Planet of the Apes‘ $54.8 million from 2011.

Internationally, War for the Planet of the Apes grossed $46 million from 61 markets, for a worldwide debut of $102.5 million. The UK ($9.5 million), Russia ($5.0 million), and Spain ($3.4 million) lead the charge, and the film has yet to open in eight of the top markets (China, South Korea, Japan, France, Germany, Australia, Brazil, and Mexico).

Made for about $150 million before marketing, War for the Planet of the Apes stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Amiah Miller, Karin Konoval, Judy Greer and Terry Notary. It received an A- CinemaScore from audiences.

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures‘ Spider-Man: Homecoming dropped 61% to second place with a second weekend of $45.2 million, to push its North American total to $208.3 million. Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya Coleman, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. The film was made for about $175 million.

In third, Universal Pictures and Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 added $18.9 million and has now earned $188 million domestically after three weeks. Internationally, the third installment has grossed $431.4 million and its worldwide total is now at $619.4 million. Despicable Me 3 was directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, and co-directed by Eric Guillon. The $80 million-budgeted film features the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Trey Parker, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Nev Scharrel, Steve Coogan, Jenny Slate, and Julie Andrews.

Writer/director Edgar Wright’s music-driven Baby Driver took fourth place with $8.8 million, for a three-week total of $73.2 million. Made for just $34 million, the film is Wright’s all-time highest-grossing film domestically. From TriStar Pictures, MRC, Working Title, and Big Talk Pictures, Baby Driver stars Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Eiza Gonzales, Jon Hamm, and Jamie Foxx.

Expanding into 2,597 theaters, Amazon and Lionsgate’s The Big Sick earned $7.6 million in the fifth spot to take its total to $16 million since the film began its limited release on June 23. Directed by Michael Showalter, the comedy stars Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, and Ray Romano.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Wonder Woman dropped to the sixth spot with $6.9 million its seventh week and has earned a total of $380.7 million. The Patty Jenkins-directed film also brought in another $3.3 million overseas this weekend for an international sum of $384.2 million. The worldwide total has now reached $764.9 million. Made for $149 million, Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, Connie Nielsen and Lucy Davis.

Also opening was Broad Green Pictures’ horror film Wish Upon, but the film debuted in seventh place with just $5.6 million from 2,250 theaters, an average of $2,483 per location. The John Leonetti-directed film stars Joey King, Ryan Phillippe, Ki Hong Lee, Mitchell Slaggert, Shannon Purser, Sydney Park, Kevin Hanchard, and Sherilyn Fenn. It received a C CinemaScore.
